Creating Pathways to Employment in Tanzania's Tourism Sector

In the foothills of Mount Meru, just outside Arusha, the VETA Hotel & Tourism Training Institute – Njiro (VHTTI) is changing lives through skills-based education. Established in 2011 under Tanzania's Vocational Educational and Training Authority (VETA), this institute offers young Tanzanians a practical pathway into one of the country's fastest-growing industries, tourism.

Whether through short-term training or full certification and diploma courses, learners can specialise in:

• Rooms Division
• Food & Beverage Service
• Culinary Arts
• Tour Guiding & Travel Operations

To complement this hands-on approach, the institute also runs a working three-star hotel, giving students real-world experience in hospitality while providing facilities for visiting guests, conferences, and workshops. VHTTI-Njiro plays a vital role in preparing graduates for employment or entrepreneurship within Tanzania's flourishing travel sector, helping to build both careers and confidence.

Go2Africa's Partnership with VHTTI-Njiro

Go2Africa has funded scholarships for school leavers from rural communities across northern Tanzania. These scholarships cover tuition, materials, and accommodation, giving students the opportunity to gain the qualifications they need to enter formal employment or start their own ventures.

To date, 27 Tanzanian students have graduated through Go2Africa-funded scholarships, with several now working in camps, lodges, and tourism services, contributing to rural economies around key ecosystems such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Together with the institute and our lodge partners, we are investing in the next generation of Tanzanian tourism professionals by sponsoring 14 students per year. This support reduces barriers to quality vocational training and creates a ripple effect of economic opportunity, career development, and personal growth for young people in and around Arusha.
