With almost 13 years of experience in the travel industry I've had the opportunity to visit several countries throughout Southern and East Africa – though with many still left on my bucket-list! It's such an amazing destination with something for everybody, and I‘m proud to be able to share my love for Africa with others. I started travelling from a young age with my parents, and I want to give my children that same opportunity so that they can grow and be exposed to the amazing, unique experiences that Africa has to offer.
We were in the Serengeti, on our way back to our lodge after a day out in the bush, and just on a hill to one side we spotted some movement – when we got there, 3 cheetahs had just caught a Thompson's gazelle and were going to town on it. In the meantime, a couple of jackals had arrived and wanted in on the meal, so they would sneak closer and bite the cheetahs' tails – which obviously very much annoyed the cheetahs. After a couple of times the one cheetah had had enough and started chasing the jackal – he didn’t do too much damage, just gave him a chomp and left to go back to the gazelle, but it was such a comical scene with the jackals basically going out of their way to annoy the cheetahs. And it just goes to show: on safari, it's all about timing!
There was an elderly couple from the US – it was their first trip to Africa, and they seemed a bit hesitant and unsure. I managed to put together an amazing trip for them, everything went perfectly, and they felt very comfortable throughout the trip, which is so important. I was pregnant at the time, and after they‘d returned home I received a package with a beautiful little baby jersey and matching beanie which she'd knitted for me to show her appreciation.
When going on safari, go in with a realistic mindset, animals don't work on a schedule. You might not see anything exciting on one drive, and then see all of the Big 5 on the next. But don't feel discouraged on the quieter drives, just take in everything else there is to see, it's not just about the “big-ticket” items. The guides are very knowledgeable about the flora and their different uses, and even the smaller animals, insects, and birds – everything has a story and you'd be surprised at how interesting a drive like that can get. Also don't be afraid to ask questions, even if they seem silly, it’s always good to learn something new.
