Client Experience Expert

I was born and raised in Mombasa, Kenya, a vibrant coastal tourist destination that has a rich history, culture, and the most pristine sandy beaches you'll ever see. With both of my parents having worked in the tourism industry for years, it was only natural that I followed in their footsteps. My passion for Africa and its incredible landscapes is evident in everything I do. I enjoy outdoor activities such as kayaking, camping, and hiking, which further fuel my love for exploring the natural beauty of my country and continent. I have enjoyed my time with Go2Africa so far and will continue to refine my skills and deliver exceptional experiences.

Soulful Safari Reflection

One of my favourite travel memories has to be my kayaking trip in Magadi, paddling along the Ewaso Nyiro River in the Great Rift Valley. It was 4 intense days of paddling and dealing with the brutal sun. We would spend about 5-6 hours a day on the water, making our way through different currents, sometimes smooth and peaceful, other times challenging and unpredictable and, in the evening, we would set camp by the riverbank. The river wasn't just a path for us, it was life for so many. Along the way, we'd see Maasai men and women gracefully crossing the river, completely unfazed by the water, making their way to the other side. School kids would wade through, uniforms tucked up to keep them dry, determined to get to class. People gathered along the banks while the occasional herd of cows or goats would be led down for a drink.

One particular night stands out, the night the elephants came. I was tucked in my tiny tent when I heard slow, steady footsteps in the darkness. A small herd of elephants was making its way to the river, just a few metres from where we camped. They didn't bother us, they were just going about their night, getting a drink. It was both a terrifying and incredible experience at the same time!

Between the heat, the sunburns, the lack of showers, bush toilets, and the long days of paddling, it wasn't exactly a luxury trip but getting to see the rhythm of life along the river, the people, the wildlife, the sheer beauty of it all made every second worth it. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

My Best African Travel Advice

My best advice falls into 4 categories:

  • Learn Basic Swahili: Simple phrases like “Jambo” (Hello), “Asante” (Thank you), and “Simba” (Lion) can go a long way in connecting with locals.
  • Engage with Your Guide: Ask questions and learn from their knowledge. They have a wealth of information about the flora, fauna, and local culture that can further enrich your experience.
  • Local Cuisine: Try local dishes when possible. It's a great way to experience the culture and enjoy the diversity of flavours.
  • Enjoy the Journey: Sometimes the journey itself is just as important as the destination. Enjoy the drives, the landscapes, the people and the small moments in between the big sightings.
