Kenya's Amboseli, Samburu & Mara (Fly-In)
Go on your own personal migration across Kenya, with each step of the way being an opportunity for extraordinary game viewing under expert guidance, usually by Masaai or Samburu rangers.
After resting up in Nairobi after a long haul flight, fly south-east to Mount Kilimanjaro and the great elephant herds of Amboseli National Park, to the true African style of spacious tents at Tortilis Camp. Sleep the sleep of the enchanted after a day's game viewing and a relaxing massage, followed by a fine meal. Sad to leave but excited to move on, you head into the dry Northern Frontier District, to the land of the enigmatic Samburu, where the Elephant Bedroom is your home. You will be forgiven for thinking you have packed up all your creature comforts and gone back into the past, so remote and unspoilt is this spectacular location.
Your last stop is Ilkeliani Camp in the Masai Mara, nestled in riverine forest. This is the home of vast herds of plains game, followed always by hungry predators. And for you, delicious food, campfires by night and stargazing to end off perfect days.
We went to the Four Points Sheraton to fly out. It was a good place to stay before leaving…great service!
After landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be met and transferred on a quick drive to the Four Points by Sheraton Nairobi Airport Hotel. The best part? There's no long commute, so you'll be checked into your room and ready to enjoy a relaxing hot shower in no time.
Once settled, you can head to the restaurant for a delicious meal or unwind by the swimming pool, soaking up the new-city atmosphere on a lounger. Depending on your arrival time, you might even have the chance to book trips to other Nairobi landmarks, such as the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and AFEW Giraffe Centre.

Tortilis Camp in Amboseli was absolutely phenomenal. They greeted us with open arms upon our arrival and that really made us feel like we were at home. The food was absolutely incredible as were the people tending to us. Our safari guide's name was Jackson and he was amazingly knowledgeable and very easy to talk with and had an answer to all our questions. We loved all the surprises they had in store for us. From the bush breakfast to the sundown set up on top of a mountain on our last day and the visit to the Masai Tribe. I would go back to that camp in a heart beat.

When we landed on the airstrip to go to Elephant Bedroom Camp in the Samburu, we were picked up by our guide Papayo in full Samburu dress. When he picked us up, he said, “My name is Papayo. The camp has given everyone English names and I'm one of five people with the name James. My name is not difficult to say and I hope you will call me Papayo.” We were happy to do that and wished we knew the birth name of the other people who waited on us on our trip.
Papayo was dressed in full Samburu native dress. He told us when we met him that he didn't wear those clothes for our benefit, but that he was dressed the way he dresses every day. We appreciated having an opportunity to visit Pap...

Papayo was dressed in full Samburu native dress. He told us when we met him that he didn't wear those clothes for our benefit, but that he was dressed the way he dresses every day. We appreciated having an opportunity to visit Papayo's village and learn about the Samburu people.
Papayo made sure that we saw the “Samburu Special Five”: Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy's Zebra, Gerenuk Antelope and the Somali Ostrich whose male has blue legs, etc. instead of pink.
Papayo went out of his way to make sure I got safely from one area to the other because my knees and hips were bothering me. He held my hand from the Landcruiser to the commons area where it was easier to walk and helped me in and out of the vehicle.
After one afternoon of our animal searches, Papayo asked Ron and I to stay behind after the other two people from the vehicle had left. Papayo told us that he wanted to meet us at the Landcruiser at 7:30 pm to take us to see a special animal. He took us to an area by the river that was all lit up and there was a table for 2 laid for dinner. Ron and I were served dinner by candlelight by our waiter who said he was sorry he wouldn't see us at dinner that night at lunch. When we were ready for dessert, the waiter brought out a birthday cake for Ron and all the people there who had set up this dinner sang Happy Birthday to Ron. I had tears in my eyes and felt quite emotional that these people would go out of their way to provide Ron with a surprise birthday. The entire trip was to celebrate his 80th birthday and this was a very special event. We were overwhelmed with the kindness of these people. I was particularly sad to say goodbye to Papayo.
The lodge was great – the staff were all wonderful and the place is amazing post the rebuild after the flood. The “tents” are now raised up about a meter on a platform and are very luxurious – e.g. hardwood floors throughout, king sized bed, double sink, exterior seating area. And the common areas are great – we wandered the site with Eric, the manager, as he gave us a nature walk (he knows his birds well) and we saw the older form of tents and common area and it’s a huge step up.
