Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA)

Cape Town's low-income suburbs face chronic food insecurity, while much viable urban land remains underused. Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) is a South African non-profit addressing these challenges by focusing on food security, ecological farming, and environmental education in underserved communities. Their work links practical agriculture with long-term community empowerment, creating more resilient and sustainable futures.
The project we are currently supporting is James House, a long-standing NGO serving vulnerable children in the urban townships of Hout Bay. James House is revitalising its food garden to strengthen food security, education, and community resilience. The goal is to transition this space into a thriving market garden, selling organic produce while equipping youth with hands-on agricultural experience. By enhancing soil health, improving yields, and deepening environmental education, the project creates a future where children and their communities benefit from regenerative food production while safeguarding their natural environment.

Go2Africa is proud to partner with FTFA to direct impact funding into organic agriculture and community skills development. Our support has funded the James House food garden in Hout Bay, which combines high-yield vegetable production with a permaculture learner's garden for youth skills development. Our contribution covered infrastructure, tools, planting materials, educational content, and three hands-on workshops delivered between March and May 2025.
Since the start of the partnership, the garden has become a vibrant hub of learning and food production. More than 40 participants, including youth and community members, have received practical training in soil health, pest management, and sustainable crop planning. The project is improving local food resilience, boosting community involvement, and strengthening the culture of ecological responsibility.
Looking forward, the site will expand into a full community market garden, tripling its planting area, adding a seedling nursery, and establishing weekly market stall days. This expansion will supply neighbourhood retailers, create micro-enterprise opportunities, and embed practical food-growing skills, strengthening household nutrition and local resilience.
This initiative aligns with Go2Africa's Positive Impact vision, fostering thriving communities and ecosystems through nature-positive, sustainable livelihoods. It helps unlock the value of natural capital, enhances education, and supports the shift toward profitable, regenerative agriculture.
