Types Of Safaris In Mozambique And Their Cost

A lesser-visited Southern African gem, Mozambique tours and safaris offer an unbeatable vacation that few other destinations on the continent can match. Visitors enjoy the best of both worlds, delighting in convenient, easy access to both untouched wildernesses teeming with Africa's iconic wildlife, as well as unspoilt coastline perfectly complemented by tropical islands offering pristine beaches, world-class resorts and hotels, and a whole lot of fun in the sun.

Combining a bush and beach experience within one destination makes for a logistical dream and streamlined planning, but what will a safari in Mozambique set you back? We dive into the associated costs, looking at everything from the influence of holiday types, levels of comfort, and other extras that have an impact on the budget.

Mozambique Safaris: What Are Your Options?

Both Mozambique's mainland and offshore islands offer a good balance of high-end luxury escapes and rustic wilderness experiences, catering to a wide range of travellers, from families and friend groups to couples and honeymooners. But the final cost of your trip will ultimately depend on your travel tastes and interests. Everything from the accommodation you choose to non-inclusive activities you want to add and the time of year you wish to visit will influence the final amount.

Mozambique comprises several classic safari regions and tropical archipelagos, each offering its own unique experiences, logistics, and comfort levels. Therefore, where you choose to go will undoubtedly affect the cost of your trip. The best places to go in Mozambique often tend to be the more expensive options due to popularity, remoteness, or a mixture of both.

Something else you'll need to consider is the type of experience you choose to have, as this will have an impact too:

  • Helicopter Transfers: This premium way to travel is common between Vilanculos and island resorts, cutting down on travel time and providing picturesque aerial views of the scenery below.
  • Fly-In Safaris & Charter Flights: Mozambique's infrastructure makes domestic travel a breeze with regular flights between the capital, national parks, and islands the most efficient and comfortable way to get around. The more remote regions will require charter flights, which will ultimately increase costs.
  • Boat & Dhow Transfers: When travelling from the mainland to the archipelagos, or island hopping, opt for a scenic transfer on water. Speedboats, motorboats, and traditional dhow sailing are a great way to explore Mozambique's coast. Some resorts and hotels might have it as an inclusive perk, but it's best to consider this an extra cost.
  • Walking & Cycling: This is not an option on Mozambique's mainland, but on smaller islands like Benguerra, you can embrace the car-free island life and get around on foot or by bicycle. Resorts and hotels often provide complimentary bikes, while others would have them available to rent.
  • Beach & Island-Hopping Vacations: Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago and Quirimbas Archipelago offer the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Enjoy slow-paced dhow sailing and island-hopping, or explore the Indian Ocean when kayaking through mangroves, scuba diving, or snorkelling. Please note that non-inclusive activities and experiences will incur an extra cost.
  • Wildlife Safaris: Back on Mozambique's mainland, plenty of classic safari experiences await. Although the country's wildlife tourism is growing steadily, at the moment, it's still considered a hidden gem, which means wild, crowd-free game drives! Gorongosa National Park is Mozambique's flagship reserve and promises fantastic sightings of some of Africa's most iconic animals.

How Does The Time Of Year Affect The Cost Of A Mozambique Safari?

They say the ‘best things in life are free', while that may be true for most things, it certainly doesn't apply to African safaris. Unfortunately, the best time to visit Mozambique is also the most costly. Spanning from May to November, this period promises cooler temperatures and the least chance of rain when visiting Mozambique's islands, while game viewing peaks during the dry months of August and September.

Although every penny is worth the memorable experiences, we understand that not everyone is keen to empty out their pockets on one trip. The good news is that Mozambique's shoulder season offers an incredible getaway to Southern Africa – all you'll need to do is put up with the brief spells of downpours before the sun makes its return. Your reward? Fewer crowds, special deals on accommodation and flights, and value-adds (free nights, discounts, and upgrades).

We do, however, suggest not travelling to the Bazaruto Archipelago over January and February as this is the region's cyclone season, bringing incessant torrential rain.

Additional Costs To Consider

When planning your holiday, it's best not to make assumptions. One thing that you'll want to make sure you understand fully is what is included and excluded in your package.

Start by diving into our blog on visa-free African countries for US citizens, as that may tick off one of the boxes regarding extra costs already. What possible additional costs could you come across? Have a look at our list below:

  • International Flights/Getting to the Country: Unless explicitly stated otherwise, it's best to assume these are not included.
  • Internal Transfers: Some accommodations may include free in-country road transfers or flights, but there's a high likelihood that it'll be an extra cost.
  • Vaccinations: Some vaccines may be required before entry. It's best to consult your healthcare provider to ensure the requirements are met. For more information on vaccines, visit our page on the required vaccinations for travel to Africa in 2025.
  • Tipping: In Africa, tipping is not mandatory but is customary and greatly appreciated by staff. It's advised to have cash on hand for tipping, but some accommodations may allow for this to be paid via card. Consult our tipping guide for more information.
  • Personal and Travel Insurance: It's highly suggested to be covered in cases of unexpected situations, such as medical emergencies or trip cancellations, but this will need to be arranged and paid for in your personal capacity.
  • Additional Activities: A broad range of activities are available in your itinerary, but certain excursions, like scuba diving, boat rides, and cultural visits, may come at an additional cost.
  • Exchange Rate: International card payments will likely incur a small fee for paying in a different currency. Mozambique's official currency is the Metical, but US Dollars are widely accepted.
